The Pursuit

This kinetic sculpture measures over 78” long x 20” wide x 40” tall. The Great White Shark is in constant motion as it swims fluidly towards it’s prey. The Great White Shark was hand carved out of a single 300 pound Bastogne Walnut burl log. The seal is also in constant swimming motion as it tries to escape to live another day. The seal was carved out of Old Growth Redwood Burl estimated to be over 1000 years old. I teamed up with Travis Schattle, an engineer who designs and builds kinetic art. He spent over 750 hours developing the gears and mechanisms from scratch. He designed and 3D printed every component and finished them off with custom hand polished brass inlays. This sculpture took over 1200 hours to create and is truly one of a kind. The mechanism was built to efficiently and quietly run continuously and is displayed on a 6 1/2 foot base of Black Walnut.
